The next device to run CyanogenMod out of the box won’t simply be a production phone with a custom ROM on it. No, it’ll be far more special. CyanogenMod has teamed up with a company called OnePlus to create a CyanogenMod-based smartphone from scratch, with a “unique twist.”
OnePlus is run by CEO Pete Lau, an ex-Oppo executive. The new companies first production phone will be a device running CyanogenMod software. This device has been dubbed the OnePlus One. It will be designed around CyanogenMod, instead of having CyanogenMod put on an existing design. Expect it to launch in the first half of 2014.
The first device to come with CyanogenMod, the Oppo N1, was a bit of a niche device. It’s exciting to see a device being designed around the operating system. If it’s a device for everyone, like the Nexus 5 is (and not the overly large N1), we could see a real success for the companies. Would you buy a fully custom CyanogenMod phone? Leave a comment!
