Meizu recently announced that they were ready to take their next step in entering the U.S. market by making an appearance at CES 2014 with some of their devices. We caught up with them on the floor of CES 2014 and got to spend a couple minutes checking out the Meizu MX3 smartphone. The flagship device comes loaded with an Exynos octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM and a 5.1-inch 1080p display. Meizu has Android 4.2 running on the device with their Flyme UI on top of that.

Meizu says the MX3 will not be the actual phone for the manufacturers U.S. debut. A device with even better hardware and support for 4G LTE is expected some time in the third quarter of 2014. The Meizu MX3 does give potential customers an idea of what might be possible though.

Hands on with the Garmin vivofit at CES 2014

Smart glasses and smart watches are not the only wearable tech making an appearance at CES 2014. Companies continue to try to help users improve their health through “fitness” bands. The Garmin vivofit is one such device. Similar to a watch, fitness bands like the vivofit are designed to be worn 24 hours a day as they continually collect data about the activities you are engaged in. The Garmin vivofit is capable of collecting information like number of steps walked per day, miles per day, calories burned, and even heart rate if connected to an appropriate heart rate monitor. Garmin has also added a feature that will display a red bar on the display if you have been sitting for too long.

Garmin’s take on a fitness band includes the “guts” which is the hardware part itself as well as a variety of interchangeable bands in different colors and sizes. Unlike similar devices from other manufacturers, the Garmin vivofit will work with both Android and iOS devices. It will also sync wirelessly with the online Garmin Connect web site to populate a dashboard of information to help users make healthier decisions based on the data that has been gathered.

The Garmin vivofit costs $129. You can check out our hands on video from our CES 2014 coverage below.

Wetley now offering prescription lenses for Google Glass

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/androidandme?i=D5YIyoHhhMo:rEnKGLN-GH0:D7DqB2pKExk

Google Glass is an interesting product. It’s a pair of glasses with no glass to speak of. As a beta product, it’s understandable that Google hasn’t offered any sort of lens solution to the public. In fact, when the device launches, we’ll definitely see one. But for now, Wetley has you covered.

Wetley is now offering a special snap-on frame made out of stainless steel that will hold lenses on your Google Glass. There is no modification necessary to your $1500 hardware. You can buy just the GGRX frame for $99 and get tinted lenses, or you can go all the way and get prescription lenses made for $149. Considering the cost of Google Glass, this is pretty dang affordable.

You can buy these frames now, and they’ll start shipping in 2-3 weeks. Hit the source link to order them! It’s awesome to see such a simple solution to those who need it. Now that Google Glass has prescription lenses, is it any more appealing to you? Tell us in the comments!

Motorola planning something new for Europe, will unveil its plans on January 14th

http://cdn01.androidauthority.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/moto-invite-2.jpg

moto-invite-2

Back when the Moto X was first announced, many folks in Europe were disappointed to learn that Motorola would not be releasing the handset outside of the Americas. At the time Motorola promised that they still considered Europe a key priority for Motorola and that the Moto X was simply the first in a new product portfolio, hinting something new would eventually make its way to Europe.

Since then, most of the world has seen the impressively priced Moto G, but it appears that Motorola isn’t stopping there. Motorola has now begun sending out press invites for an event that will take place in London on January 14th. In the invite, Motorola says that they will be welcoming a new “addition to the European Motorola family of products”.

Being a tease, Motorola didn’t give out any other juicy details, but we have to wonder: could the company finally be preparing to bring a higher-end flagship phone to Europe that will complement the existing Moto X and Moto G? It’s really hard to say one way or another.

It’s possible this could be a Europe (or even UK) only handset in similar vein to the Moto X, or it could be something completely brand new. Heck, who is to say it isn’t a tablet or wearable device? Again, we just don’t know.

Luckily we only have a week left before we find out what Motorola has up their sleeves. What do you think, will this be a variant of the Moto X? A brand new handset, or something else entirely?

Motorola hosting January 14th event in London, possibly to unveil European Moto X

http://img.talkandroid.com/uploads/2013/11/Moto_X_Red_TA-630x341.jpg

Moto_X_Red_TA-630x341

When Motorola announced the Moto X, they said that they were working on eventually bringing the Moto X to European countries. Well, that still hasn’t happened, but Motorola has scheduled an event for January 14th in London to “welcome a new addition to the European Motorola family of products.” Since the Moto G is available in European countries, it would make sense for Motorola to finally offer their flagship device in countries besides the US. Obviously there’s still the issue of handling MotoMaker in other countries, but I think Motorola and Google have something up their sleeve if they plan on making an entire event out of it, as opposed to just announcing something at CES.

Any guesses on what the announcement will be?

Sony announces in-car receiver that doubles as smartphone cradle

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/androidandme?i=LpehX-N2tHM:eKqeNMz_PvM:D7DqB2pKExk

Sony is well known for its in-car audio solutions, from head units to amplifiers and speakers. But its newest product comes as a surprise to us. It merges car audio with your smartphone. This is the Sony XSP-N1BT, a new head unit announced at CES 2014 that uses your smartphone as the display.

Instead of a a large display on the front, like most head units for cars do, this “cradle” just has a black face. This is where you insert your phone, where it will automatically pair using NFC and charge via Qi technology (if your device supports those functions). It can also charge your device over USB. The head unit then uses your smartphone as a display by way of a Sony remote app, where you can select your input. You can stream audio over Bluetooth or use more traditional means like CDs and radio.

Price and release date weren’t announced, but I have to say that this is an absolutely amazing product. As someone who uses Bluetooth audio for the car exclusively, I would love to dock my smartphone and have it control my head unit (though the curved back would probably be ill suited for such a cradle). You can even multitask with Google Maps while it’s in the cradle.

However, I worry this head unit won’t be very popular when it comes out. Not many cars these days have the double DIN slot necessary to install a custom head unit, so only owners with older cars will be able to use this. However, I still love the idea. Do you?
