2012 was the year for 2GB mobile DRAM, 2013 was the year for 3GB, and I think you can guess what 2014 will be. That’s right, 4GB. Samsung has announced the development of the first 8 gigabit, low power double data rate 4 (LPDDR4) mobile DRAM. It’s fabricated on 20-nanometer class process technology and has 1 gigabyte on a single die, making it the largest density available for DRAM components today. What can you expect from this? Well of course better performance. We should get 50% higher performance over LPDDR3 (3GB) and it will do it with 40% less energy.

I would imagine we will see LPDDR4 in at least the Galaxy S 5 and Galaxy Note 4. We may even find it in one of their shiny new tablets that will be unveiled soon.
